Three common levels
Level 1 — Casual snoops
Advertisers, data brokers, nosy acquaintances.
- Use a privacy-hardened browser
- Enable encrypted DNS
- Limit ad-trackers with uBlock Origin
Level 2 — Determined profilers
Employers, insurers, aggressive marketers stitching identity across devices.
- Separate profiles for work and personal life
- Use aliases and a password manager
- Audit app permissions quarterly
Level 3 — Targeted attackers
Abusive ex-partners, stalkers, or state-level adversaries.
- Use Tor Browser or Tails for sensitive tasks
- Prefer Signal with disappearing messages
- Seek expert help — guides alone are not enough
